Need A Homeopathic Digestion Remedy? Learn Which Herbal Remedies For Digestion May Improve Your Health

We are what we eat, eating makes us happy and having a good digestion helps continue that happiness. The number of issues that poor digestion can cause are many and can surely not be very agreeable. They range from diarrhea, a stomach upset, gas or bloating and my least favorite, heartburn. Western medicine most often takes a dreadful toll on your system by attempting to neutralize the acids present in your stomach. Doctors agree that it is very rarely just a single thing creating digestive problems. There are several herbs for digestion that you can have, Jamison Starbuck, J.D., N.D., who is an accomplished and licensed naturopathic and homeopathic consultant prescribes: Gentian, Fennell, Ginger, Aloe and Peppermint.

These roots and herbs have been there for ages and and make ideal herbs for digestion. Peppermint is one of the oldest medicinal plants that we identify and is common to find in your beautiful garden or growing naturally in your backyard. “Herbal Medicine” author Rudolph Weiss says that the peppermint herb has three primary benefits. It can encourage the gallbladder and liver to produce more bile, which assists in disinfecting the stomach from any imbalances. It also has several aesthetic properties that help anaesthetize the mucous membrane which discourages nausea and vomiting and also aid in the lessening of gas and indigestion. This is a simple herb for digestion that can be had in various forms, but generally the more enjoyable is tea.

Based on the book written by Phillips, S., et al. “Zingiber officinale (ginger) — an anti-emetic for day case surgery,” Ginger is popular for its aromatic properties, just remember that smell of freshly chopped ginger being fried while awaiting your order at a table in a popular Thai restaurant or even the pervading scent in your kitchen when fresh ginger is being cooked. Ginger is also popular due to its anti-nausea properties. In a trial conducted on a group consisting of 80 very tense young naval cadets, on the high tide open waters in 1988, they came to a conclusion that Ginger had major advantages in decreasing seasickness and nausea. Not just that, it also revealed that Ginger was a good preventive measure, and a cure too.

Some herbs for digestion, like Fennel, Aloe, and Gentian, help the control and prevention of stomach upsets. Fennel has a mainly strong impact against relief of spasms in smooth muscles and other digestive issues like morning sickness. It has also been recognized to be used in patients going through radiation treatments to help calm their stomachs. Aloe, in addition to having a naturally smoothing effect on your stomach, also includes amino acids, vitamin C and enzymes. Gentian is one of the lesser known herbs for digestion. Owing to its bitter taste, which assists in encouraging digestive juices it makes it an excellent preventive measure against a stomach upset. Gentian also helps you to extract all supplementary nutrients into your system like vitamin B12, and iron.

Obtaining herbs for digestion can be as easy as growing them yourself, or procuring them from the local market, but remember, if you are not sure then you should get advice from a professional and don’t forget to drink lots of water. Herbal remedies can work,   as long as they are used safely.

Based on the personal experiences I had with doctors, this is what they do and this is what I’ve observed. Can Alternate Health Treatment Be Trusted

There are people who simply refuse to use any type of medication other than what they consider to be pure alternative health care. This means they want to use natural remedies or treatment such as colon cleanse as opposed to what is known otherwise as western medicine. Alternative is a tough word for some, because such practices are things/practise that were used long before any type of western medicine was already practiced. However, natural remedies are still regarded as alternative in the US.

A popluar form of alternative health is acupuncture. Such form of treatment has been used long ago to cure just about anything. Small needles are pierce into the body near pressure points and are meant to open and faciliate the flow of energy through the body. It is believed that the smooth flow of these energies are tightly couple with illness. Those that use such alternative health swear by it, and think it can do just about anything for them. Some even use the treatment for addictions such as drinking and smoking.

Alternative health may also imply using natural herb to cure. But you still need to be careful. Do not think that natural means safe. If you are on medication, you should consult your doctore before going on any alternate treatment. This is because natural herbs can react with your medications. You do not want to take anything that could further harm you rather than helping you. Never stop your medication unless your doctor say so.

You can certainly on your own, learn about and practice natural health remedies. But you do need to know what you are doing. That means you have to find someone who is qualified in this field to guide you.If you are treating your loved ones, then you should really make sure you know what you are doing. Alternative health practices can be very effective, but you still have to practise carefulness.

Can Garlic Be Used As A Natural Remedy To Heal The Body

For more than 900 years garlic has been used for medicinal purposes.  From ancient Egypt to medieval Europe, all the way to America, garlic has been used to treat different ailments.  Garlic has stood the test of time and now has over 2200 credible studies to support its health benefits.(1)  These health benefits of Garlic come at a price; garlic has a very strong odor that can last a long time in the body; because of this odor, garlic supplements have become very popular.

Garlic supplements are an easy and effective way to consume garlic, so your friends and family will not be offended by the odor.  These types of supplements have been around for more than 25 years.   There are two types of garlic supplements on the market and hundreds of manufactures.  You will find either Fresh Garlic supplements or Aged Garlic supplements each of which will claim their garlic is the best and most beneficial.  We are going to take a look and see which type of garlic is most beneficial and why?

First let’s look at what makes garlic so beneficial for you.  At first glance, fresh garlic does not seem to be much of a vegetable.  Garlic is consumed in very small amounts; one serving of garlic provides very little vitamins.  For example: the vitamin C in one serving of garlic is 1 mg compared to potatoes having 26mg and broccoli having 82mg.(4)  So what makes Garlic so good?  It’s the collection of compounds in Fresh garlic called sulfur compounds, this is what make it beneficial to the body.  Over 90% of the research done on garlic has been done on these sulfur compounds.  Sulfur has been used in pharmaceuticals for years.  For example antibiotics, blood pressure lowering drugs and diuretics all have sulfur.  Since sulfur is so readily absorbed into the body, pharmaceutical companies have been able to blend sulfur with medications to make them more effective.

Researchers have primarily focused on one group of sulfur compounds in garlic; this group is called thiosulfates.  Alliin and allinnase are the primary substances found in the garlic clove and both are found in separate chambers in the garlic clove.  Allinnase is an activating enzyme, when garlic is crushed or cut the alliin and allinnase combine to make thiosulfate allicin.  This new compound created is what gives garlic its beneficial effects. (3)

Research has found that allicin has a wide range of benefits.  These benefits include (1) allicin can help kill bacteria and fungi, (2) reduce inflammation, (3) prevent the common cold, (4) stop tumor growth, (5) kill cancer cells, (6) help keep blood from clotting, (7) prevent heart attach, (8) reduce LDL and raise HDL cholesterol, (9) reduce triglycerides, (10) lower blood pressure, (11) improve blood flow in the lungs and help open breathing passages, (12) help reduce liver damage, and (13) allicin works as an antioxidant fighting free radicals in the body.

All the evidence points to how allicin benefits our body yet aged garlic supplement manufactures discount allicin as the primary health compound.  You might be wondering why would anyone discount allicin as beneficial when 90% of research has focused around allicin.  Is the research wrong?

The chemistry of allicin is why manufacturers claim allicin is not the key component that benefits the body.  Studies have shown allicin to be an unstable compound.  Allicin will breaking down just after a few hours and can loose 50% of its potency from 4 – 30 days if left exposed to Air.(3)  Only a few manufactures make garlic tablets air tight.  Manufactures claim that allicin can be destroyed by stomach acids and rightfully so.  This is why fresh garlic supplements are enteric coated so that it passed through the stomach and opens in the intestines where it is needed most.  Once you understand how allicin works in the body you will see why aged garlic is not the most beneficial to choose.

Aged garlic has a compound called S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC).  This compound is what aged garlic manufacturers claim is good for you.  An interesting fact, fresh garlic doesn’t contain any SAMC. SAMC only appears after the aging process.(5)

SAMC research has been studied with cancer, heart, immune function, and stress.  These studies were conducted with high amounts of aged garlic, ranging from 10 to 20 grams each day and after months and months of continuous use.  These dosages are nowhere near normal garlic consumption levels; for over 900 years people have been consuming fresh garlic and experiencing benefits at minimal levels how can aged garlic be beneficial at normal doses?

Aged garlic is made by placing sliced garlic in a solution that contains 15% – 20% ethanol and then is stored for 20 months.  After 20 months the solution is filtered and concentrated.  While the solution is stored for 20 months, the allicin and most of the thiosulfates are destroyed.  Let’s now look at fresh garlic.

Many universities from around the world have done research on fresh garlic and the health benefits of fresh garlic consumption.  All these universities have been able to replicate each others results further proving fresh garlic’s abilities.  Replications research has found answers to some of the puzzling results in fresh garlic research.  For example, before 1995, researchers were able to replicate the cholesterol lowering benefits of garlic.  But one study after 1995 with clinical trials showed inconsistencies. (6)

Dr. Larry Lawson, a highly respected researcher, closely examined the tablets used in this clinical study and found that these tablets were not enteric coated.  Some of the people consuming these tablets digested them in the stomach; the allicin was destroyed before it reached the bloodstream.  This rendered the tablets useless and those patients didn’t experience any beneficial effect when consuming the garlic tablets.  After finding out the clinical trial used poor quality garlic tablets, Dr. Larry Lawson recommended new clinical trails to be conducted on garlic with higher quality tablets.  Researchers need to look for garlic supplements that are enteric coated and have an allicin potential rating.

Allicin can not be measured in a garlic clove or in an enteric coated tablet.  Look for a garlic supplement that has an allicin potential rating.  Credible manufactures will list this potential on there label.  Also, experts recommend the consumption of 4000mg of fresh garlic each day.  To receive 4000mg of fresh garlic each day in a tablet, look for a garlic supplement that offers at least 5,000 mcg of allicin and at least 11,000 mcg of alliin per serving.  That’s equal to about four cloves of garlic oil each day.

Keep one thing in mind, garlic is a blood thinner, if you are on medication to thin the blood such as Coumadin, consult your doctor before taking garlic.

Garlic has been consumed for hundreds if not thousands of years for spicing up meals and keeping the common cold away.  Many cultures have claimed garlic can cure what ails you.    Finally, research is here to back the benefits of fresh garlic and explain why aged garlic doesn’t work. (7)  Remember, when looking for a good quality fresh garlic supplement, make sure it delivers 5000 mcg of allicin each serving.  You can find Fresh Garlic and other vitamin supplements at your local vitamin store.

Treat Insomnia With Essential Oils

Do you persistently have trouble falling asleep at night? Do you consistently wake up in the middle of the night? Do you awake in the wee hours of the morning and can not get back to sleep? Does your sleep pattern or lack of sleep cause you to function below par during the day? If any of these scenarios sound familiar to you, you may be experiencing insomnia.

It is estimated that over 30% of adults experience insomnia periodically with over 10% experiencing chronic insomnia. Persistent lack of sleep can be detrimental to the mental and physical health of the body. During the act of sleeping our bodies under go various processes which focus on repair and regeneration.

It is important however to remember that insomnia is a symptom and not a medical issue unto itself, meaning something is causing it. Therefore if you experience chronic insomnia you need to visit a physician to determine the underlying reason for your inability to sleep.

Many individuals do not like the idea of taking medication especially sleeping aids. If you fall into this category there are many lifestyle changes and natural remedies that you may find beneficial. For instance what you ingest can have a significant effect on your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Foods that contain stimulants should be avoided. Caffeine products such as coffee, chocolate, most teas, and soda pop should be cut out of your diet. Stop smoking, nicotine is a stimulant. Ensure you are getting enough vitamin B12 and iron in your diet, this can be simplified by taking a supplement. Over eating in general can have adverse effects on the amount and quality of your sleep, avoid eating at least three hours before you plan on going to sleep.

Exercise is important to your overall health including your ability to sleep, regular exercise is a must. Many experts suggest exercising in the morning, if this is not possible than make sure you exercise early in the evening. Incorporate relaxation practices into your daily life, this can be as simple as locking yourself in the bathroom for ten minutes a day to simply unwind from your hectic day. Stress and tension have a very negative effect on your body’s ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.

If you are looking for a natural remedy you may want to try essential oils and aromatherapy. This option is easy to use and requires very little time or effort. There are a number of different oils that you can use and a variety of applications. A few of the essential oils that you can use to promote sleep and relaxation are: chamomile, neroli, oregano, sandalwood, ylang ylang, tangerine, and lavender.

To use essential oils for insomnia or to promote sleep in general there are several different applications that can be implemented.

1. Use several drops of your chosen essential oil in your diffuser, this should be done in the evening while you are winding down getting ready for bed. Never leave your diffuser on throughout the night, it must always be attended as it is a heat source.

2. Use 8 to 10 drops of the essential oil of choice in your bath water. Add the oil only after you have finished running your water and make sure you mix it into the water so that it isn’t sitting on top of the water in a little puddle.

3. Another option is to put several drops of the essential oil on a tissue and place it inside your pillow case. You will have to replace the tissue nightly before sleep.

4. Mix your essential oil into your favorite carrier oil and massage onto your body before bed.

Play around with the applications until you find the one that works best for you and for best results chose an essential oil that you enjoy the fragrance of. Again you may have to experiment with a couple of different essential oils until you find which work best for you. Another option is to mix a couple together for instance chamomile and lavender work together very effectively. Be patient and use over a few weeks before you determine whether an oil is working for you or not.

Home Remedies That Stop Acid Reflux

When I first learned that I had acid reflux I knew that I didn’t want to take medication for the rest of my life. I wanted a natural remedy for acid reflux. I have always liked the idea of not having to take drugs if I don't have too. I’m going to share with you a few of the natural remedies that I have tried and had some success with.

Apple Cider Vinegar

I first learned about vinegar for acid reflux from a medical expert. He told me that my stomach actually needs acid. The main reason I had acid reflux was due to the fact my stomach was not producing the acid that it needed. The solution was to take a teaspoon of vinegar to help my stomach out with the production of acid. It worked extremely well!

Eating Celery

This was another remedy that I experimented with. What I tried was eating a piece of celery before, during, or after each meal. Like othesr I found that it really helped my stomach calm down. I will have a real relaxing and soothing effect on your stomach. This is well worth trying if nothing else seems to work.

Milk

Try drinking a glass of milk before each meal. This works as long as you don't have any issues with dairy products. I tired this one out myself. I always found that milk helped me with spicy foods so I tried it on my acid reflux. This worked well for me.

Yogurt

As long as you don’t have a problem with dairy you should find yogurt to be very soothing. Yogurt can be very good for the stomach and can help your stomach digest foods more efficiently. A little yogurt after each meal can go a long ways.

Vegetable Diet

Vegetables and fruits can help reduce acid reflux a great deal. What is important is to find out witch ones don't bother your stomach. Some people will find citric to bother their stomach. There are also some people who may find that the citric fruits will offer relief from acid reflux. This is because citric fruits can help your stomach produce the acid that it does need.

Stay Away From Red Meat

I have found that many red meats will bother my acid reflux. This probably has to do with all the fat and grease that can be found in it. Eating red meat should be kept to a minimum, the meat you do eat should be lean, and make sure that it is cooked in way that you won't be eating lots of grease.

All of these natural remedies should help you stop acid reflux. I dare you to just give a few of these remedies a try!

Why You Should Use Natural Health Remedies

One of the basic principles about natural health remedies is that they are food. Natural remedies come from plant roots, stems, and leaves. These plant parts, herbs, are then dried and have very little other processing that would affect their potency. Of course, you have some manufacturers that may apply excess heat or vacuum in their processing, which would reduce the herbs quality.

Natural remedies are also considered all those products, single or formulations that consist of herbs, minerals, vitamins, and special natural products.

Remedy History

Natural health remedies have a long history with all cultures. In fact before drugs ever existed the only medication available to doctors was natural remedies. These natural health remedies were the plant themselves, teas and tinctures.

The Start of Drugs

Once drugs started to appear on the market, doctors and patients found these to be easy to apply and use. All drugs at the time came from processing plants and extracting the active ingredient for a specific condition. Later drugs started to appear that were synthetic and chemical similar to the active ingredient in plants.

Any food or chemical that is synthetic is processed differently by your body. It may cause an allergic reaction or it may produce a side effect. Even drugs produced from plants will produce side effects. This is an important consideration when taking drugs, since some drugs have side effects equal to the body condition they are trying to eliminate. For example a high blood pressure drug may cause high blood pressure if it is used to long.

All drugs have side effects if used to long. Drugs should only be used for a short term. Use of drugs for a loing time will kill you with their side effect. Once a doctor puts his patient on one drug, it sometimes wouldn’t be long before they are on 3 or 4 more drugs. Many people are on 10 and sometimes even more drugs at the same time.

When you are on one drug, it can produce a side effect that requires another drug to suppress that side effect. Most drugs do not cure, but suppresses the body’s illness or condition so that the body has a chance to heal. After that time, you should come off that drug, but many doctors continue to prescribe these drugs, even after you don’t need them.

Using Natural Remedies

Natural health remedies typically don’t have side effects. If you use them in high concentration and too often, then you could have side effects. Or, if you are allergic to a specific plant, then, you could have side effects.

Natural remedies have not been known to kill people. Drugs have a horrible history in that thousands of people have been kill by the use of drugs. Remedies have such a long history that every type of illness or diseases has a remedy that is useful for that illness.

You can always research what remedies you need to help your condition. Doctors don’t like that you do this, since you take away business from them when you find a remedy that works for you.

Natural remedies are also used for preventing disease, whereas drugs are not design for this purpose. Drugs suppress a symptom; remedies give whole body support and specific support for the indicated illness that they target.

In his book, Herbal Pathfinders, Robert Conrow and Arlene Hechksel describe the lives of many herbalists. Here are a few comments from this book.

Vasant lad, says that “Ayurveda sprang from cognitions that occurred in the meditative minds of the ancient seers of truth…”

Wabum says that “usually herbalists are considered to be medicine people of a certain degree… their work in the past could be considered the work of a doctor, psychologist, counselor, or teacher.”

Ellwood Carr says that “out of all the plants on the face of the earth, 90% of human energy around the world comes from only 15 species of plants…”

Natural Health Remedies such as herbs, herbal formulations, minerals, vitamins are now finding new application by consumers. Consumers are slowly becoming more independent and are questioning the excess use of drugs by doctors. They are returning to the use of natural remedies that have been effective for centuries and have little or no side effects.
