A tiny bit of hypnosis can do wonders for your stress levels

We all have stressful periods in our lives. A lot of us are walking around unconsciously holding stress in our bodies. It’s slowly eating away at our insides and at some point we suffer the consequences. I’m going to introduce you to the 60 second anti-stress exercise. Once you have rehearsed this a few times you will be able to significantly reduce your stress levels whenever you need.

Now, the important thing here is to note that this is a form of self-hypnosis … not in the ’spooky swinging-watch look-into-my-eyes’ type … but of the type that changes your internal state to something different to that of stress. (Shhhhh …. shifting state is one of the key secrets of hypnosis!)

So how do you change state in 60 seconds? You’ll have to rehearse a bit but the key is to immerse yourself in a real or imagined memory of something pleasant … not as an intellectual thing, but as a full sensory remembering.

Try the following:

  1. Make sure you are in a calm, non-disturbed environment (at least when you start-off to practice this).
  2. Close your eyes and recall a time when you experienced a wonderful feeling of release … perhaps walking in the hills one summer afternoon or when you first met you’re future partner and …
  3. Imagine that you can see the scenario from a birds-eye point-of-view and as you do, float down into the ‘you’ in that scenario and look through the eyes of that person … as if you were there.
  4. Run the scene in your imagination as a movie … as if you were there.
  5. See things in color and as you do, recall any sounds that were there … sounds that you can hear now in this scene you are participating in.
  6. Begin to notice those great feelings you are experiencing as you ‘re-live’ the scene and let them amplify through you.
  7. Bask in the imagined memory, first person, surround sound, with the feeling you felt then welling through you in the present.
  8. And open your eyes, taking a deep breath as you do so.

You should have quite dramatically changed your state by doing the above exercise. Learning how to hypnotize yourself isn’t as difficult as you might imagine! Practice it. Try different memories. Make up some fantasy imaginings if that works. Try out a few different imaginary scenarios and work out which one most improves your stress levels when used in the above exercise.

Make a promise to yourself to become more aware of when you are holding onto stress and use that as a trigger to do the exercise.

How to Do Self-Hypnosis

I’m just wondering how it feels to be hypnotized,haven’t you? This would seem at first to be relaxing. Has the idea of self hypnosis ever crossed your mind? When you are hypnotizing yourself, it is called self-hypnosis. This means there are no fancy doctor’s visits and no expensive bills to pay. Some people like to perform self-hypnosis just for fun! When your mind slows and you are relaxed, you can concentrate on the tension escaping your body. Imagine the tension as knots of stress seeping out through different areas of your body and vanishing into thin air. Start with your toes and work your way up to your legs, midsection, back, hands, fingers, neck, and head. You should have a feeling of absolute relaxation.

Continue to practice deep breathing to keep yourself relaxed. As you are slowly and deeply breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth, you will need to make sure that your eyes are closed. Your body must be approximately completely calm at this position.

View walking slowly into a wondeful body of clear water. Imagine this is going on while you are stepping down ten gorgeous steps. Once you get down midway, your are going to start stepping into the water. Make sure that the exercise is enjoyable, so that you feel relaxed. See the numbers as vividly as you can in your mind while you step lower. For paradigm, you will initiate with ten and conclusion at one. You will be completely drowned into the water at last step.

At this point, you are going to be ready to convince yourself of whatever it is you are trying to achieve. Imagine swimming toward boxes when you are trying to meet your goals and convince yourself with the positive influence of the boxes. Linger in the stream as long as you feel is indispensable, but 30 minutes to an hour is generally excellent enough to attain what you crave.

When you are finished, imagine yourself either walking back up the steps or opening a door that leads back to your life. During the whole routine think positively. You do not want this to be a bad experience. Make sure that you bring yourself “back” very slowly, possibly over a period of five to ten minutes, depending on how relaxed you are.

This process will probably take a few times for you to master, however, remember that practicing it will make you perfect. Self-hypnosis can be effective for losing weight, quitting smoking or even to improve your self esteem.

A hypnotist is not the person who hypnotizes the patient, but he or she actually guides the person to that level where the subconscious mind is brought into focus. Hypnosis therapy can not be used on every person and also the specific technique changes due to various reasons. Experts in the field have categorized the population in to three sections. People who are not that responsive to any hypnosis therapy are known as ‘Apollonians’. They are the rational type, who will never listen to anything that’s been said unless they question it and usually find themselves not trusting anyone that much. Another hypnosis technique is the use of Isomorphic metaphors.  What happens here is that the therapist makes suggestions in relation to a story, through the use of metaphors. The patient’s mind is then made to grab bits and pieces from the story and relate it to the elements of the problem or situation at hand. Using this hypnosis technique can be seen as effective in getting the person to realize that a certain action he or she has done was not right. As a result, the person’s behaviour could be improved.
The hypnosis technique ‘Embedded Command’ works well by distracting the conscious mind. What happens here is that the therapist will relate a story that will help distract the patient’s conscious mind and get their brain engaged on the story. In the story itself, the person will find hidden indirect suggestions made and accepted by the unconscious mind. The surprising effect of this hypnosis technique is that the hypnotized person will take in whatever the therapist says, without even realizing it.

There are two sides to every story. Likewise, these hypnosis techniques come with their advantages as well as the disadvantages so it is better to have a proper understanding about who you are and what you really need before embarking on any hypnosis technique.
