Stress and Heartburn: Are They Related?

by Keira Adams

Managing your stress is vital to your health if you want to lessen the heartburn symptoms you endure on a daily basis. Although there isn’t a scientific connection between heartburn and stress, there’s lots of evidence for an indirect link.

With stress, we eat more, make worse food choices, sleep less, and sometimes indulge in other bad habits like smoking and drinking. These actions will compound the problem if they end up worsening your heartburn.

If you experience chronic heartburn, then you might want to hone in on what stress factors are currently in your life so that you can eliminate them. Are some of your relationships the problem? Your job? Too many entries in your daily calendar, or not enough money in the bank? All of this can increase your stress levels and lead to heartburn if it makes you choose unwise lifestyle choices.

Once you know what triggers your symptoms, you can start to get rid of your chronic heartburn by looking for ways to lower your stress. Could you go into counseling, or even just steal some time away to unwind and appreciate life?

It’s possible to relieve stress and, by association, your heartburn through enhancing key parts of your life. Add exercise to your daily routine if you don’t already do it. It may help you lose weight, too, which can help reduce your heartburn symptoms if you’re overweight.

If relaxation is the solution, meditation and massage are both good choices to help you unwind. Even though they might not directly ease your heartburn, they can slow the pace of your life and let you unwind and enjoy a lifestyle that will reduce the frequency of heartburn attacks.

Perhaps setting aside time each day to listen to your favorite music will help to relax you and still your mind. This kind of relaxation is helpful in stopping your cravings for food, alcohol or cigarettes. These habits can all lead to a bad case of heartburn.

You might like to exchange your bad habits with a more positive activity, such as laughter. Give your mood a boost, drop stress, and lose your troubles by searching out humor in the world around you.

Look for ways to lower your stress and treat your heartburn that won’t hit your wallet too hard. Money problems certainly won’t help your problem, so you need to take advantage of the many no-cost heartburn management techniques that are available.

Heartburn Relief Through Natural Remedies

When you have heartburn, food may seem like your worst enemy. However, a lot of home remedies are derived from your kitchen.

Bicarbonate of soda can be used for relief by consuming a half-teaspoon of baking soda in a one-half glass of water and drink. It may not taste that great, but a lot of people assert this works. Although this may seem unusual, you will get relief if you mix 1 tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoonful of honey and 1 cup of warm water. You may think anything that contains vinegar is going to hurt, but if you consume it at the first sign of heartburn it can have an excellent positive effect.

Drinking a glass of buttermilk is believed to work wonders, just be sure not to confuse it with regular milk, which can be an acid producer. Another conventional remedy for acid relief is cinnamon. Brew a cup of cinnamon tea using cinnamon sticks and drink up. Eating a couple of slices of cinnamon toast while drinking the tea gives an extra advantage.

How about another use for ginger; take a cup of water and add 1 1/2 teaspoons ginger root and simmer for 10 minutes and drink as needed. Even sage used in tea will settle down that acid feeling.

Not necessarily remedies, but a few tips to remember is to eat up smaller meals, eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Do not eat right prior to bedtime giving your stomach a two-hour break. And once in bed try sleeping with your head lifted up on a couple of pillows.
